This article comprehensively examines the concept, essence, and evidentiary significance of an expert opinion in criminal proceedings. The author considers the expert opinion to be an important source of evidence, prepared in accordance with procedural requirements and based on specialized knowledge, and provides a detailed analysis of its structural components, namely the introductory, research, and concluding sections. The article also offers a scholarly analysis of the types of expert opinions, in particular categorical (definitive) and probabilistic opinions, as well as their possible use in criminal justice. Special attention is paid to the criteria for evaluating an expert opinion, including its relevance, admissibility, reliability, and evidentiary weight. Furthermore, the study addresses potential deficiencies arising during the forensic examinations and discusses possible ways to remedy them. In conclusion, the author substantiates the influence of expert opinions on judicial decision-making and highlights their practical significance.
