Annotatsiya

The article is devoted to the theoretical and methodological foundations of developing idiomatic competence in students of non-linguistic higher education institutions. Idiomatic competence is interpreted as an integral component of communicative competence which ensures the adequate comprehension and appropriate use of figurative units of language in authentic communication. On the basis of an analysis of classical phraseological theory, cognitive linguistics, psycholinguistic research on idiom processing, and studies of second language idiom acquisition, the article identifies the principal linguistic, cognitive, and sociocultural factors that complicate the acquisition of English idioms by non-linguistic students. A four-stage methodological model is substantiated, comprising contextual presentation, cognitive analysis, communicative practice, and independent production, supported by digital educational technologies and criteria-based assessment. It is argued that the systematic integration of idiom instruction into university English courses contributes to the development of learners’ communicative competence, intercultural awareness, and overall language proficiency.
