The article deals with the problem of the role and significance of the ethnogenetic principle in the investigation of the functional aspect of the language. The author carries out literature study of the works dealing with the analysis of language history. Comparative study of different viewpoints to problems touched makes it possible to work out a strategy for applying the ethnogenetic principle in analyzing the language.
