This article presents an analytical study of the life, rich scholarly heritage, and academic activities of Maulana Muhammad Sharif Bukhari, a polymath, scholar, and mystic who emerged within the 17th-century intellectual milieu of Bukhara. Specifically, it offers a thematic classification of approximately 30 works authored by the scholar, along with a brief catalog analysis of more than 100 manuscript and lithograph copies preserved in repositories across Uzbekistan and abroad (Turkey, Russia, and Tajikistan). Through the lens of Muhammad Sharif Bukhari’s writings in the fields of linguistics, literature, Islamic jurisprudence (fiqh), theology (aqidah–kalam), Sufism, and ethics, the article demonstrates that the science of the Ashtarkhanid period was not in a state of “decline.” Rather, it was an era characterized by distinctive systematization and a new evolutionary stage in the tradition of writing marginalia and supercommentaries (hashiya) on certain rational sciences that had previously flourished but were becoming obscure.
