This article examines the causes and factors driving the emergence of the concept of “smart cities” worldwide. It analyzes the impact of accelerated urbanization, resource efficiency, environmental challenges, and digital technological development on the evolution of the smart city concept. Practical examples of the application of smart city technologies in leading global cities (Singapore, Barcelona, Dubai, Amsterdam, and Tallinn) are also considered. The study has both scientific and practical implications for ensuring sustainable urban development, optimizing governance, and improving the quality of social services.
