This article is devoted to the study of Charlemagne (Karl der Große) and the Frankish Empire in German historiography. It reveals how the image of Charlemagne has been interpreted in modern historiography. The study highlights Charlemagne’s efforts to strengthen imperial power, his role as a defender of the Christian religion, and his contribution to the formation of European political unity.
