This article analyzes the artistic image, which is one of the key concepts in those areas of literary criticism that are based on the aesthetic nature of art. However, there are many uncertainties and controversial points in the definition and application of this concept. A literary work appears before the reader as a text that is constructed from a linear sequence of linguistic signs. But behind the words and sentences there are images. Why is this happening? Are images always present in the text? What criteria exist for identifying them? These issues are discussed in detail in the article. First, it is worth recalling the provisions that are assumed to be generally accepted in the theory of artistic image.
