The relevance of this study lies in the need to move beyond summative assessment and examine how students understand their learning processes, identify difficulties, explain errors, and select strategies for improvement. In Russian-language courses for students in non-linguistic programs, reflection can connect language learning with professional communication, promote more accurate expression, and support purposeful use of feedback. This article aims to provide a theoretical foundation for a set of criteria and indicators for assessing students’ reflective competence in Russian-language instruction. Four interrelated criteria are proposed: motivational-value, cognitive-analytical, operational-regulatory, and evaluative-prognostic. Observable indicators are defined for each criterion, along with appropriate assessment tools, including a reflective questionnaire, error-analysis task, self-assessment of oral or written performance, feedback record, and individual improvement plan. A preliminary three-level rubric is also presented to describe observable manifestations of reflection. The practical contribution lies in systematizing diagnostic criteria for Russian-language instruction in non-linguistic higher education. The model represents a methodological proposal rather than completed experimental research. Therefore, it requires pilot testing with student groups, assessment of inter-rater reliability, and validation of the proposed indicators and performance-level descriptors before use in high-stakes assessment.
