The article analyzes Pearl S. Buck’s autobiographical work The Child Who Never Grew, highlighting the symbolic interpretation of the child’s image. In the figure of her disabled daughter Carol, hope and suffering emerge as complementary symbols. Through the mother’s dreams, hopes, and simultaneous sorrows, the social and personal aspects of disability are revealed. The study results demonstrate that the symbolic interpretation of the child’s image serves as a literary expression of humanism, love, and patience.
