A comparative analysis of the performance of WebSocket and industrial communication protocols in real-time digital twin systems

The objective of this study is to evaluate the performance of WebSocket as an intermediate protocol for integrating digital twins with Siemens S7 PLCs (Programmable Logic Controllers) in remote environments and compare it with MQTT (Message Queuing Telemetry Transport), Modbus TCP (Transmission Control Protocol), and OPC UA (Open Platform Communications Unified Architecture) in terms of latency and resource utilization in accordance with IEC 61588. The experiment included an S7-1200 PLC, Node-RED on AWS (Amazon Web Services), and a digital twin in Unity 3D. Latencies were measured using timestamps (n=500) in local and cloud environments; CPU, RAM, and bandwidth were evaluated.
