The article examines morphological hybridization in Japanese vocabulary: the word-formational interaction of hiragana and katakana components in konshugo (混種語), hybrid words. Hybridization in nouns, verbs, adjectives and mimetic words and the meaning-differentiating function of script variants are considered. Graphic hybridization is shown to be an independent wordformation mechanism tied to the word’s part of speech.
