The article examines the literary and typological features of the horror genre and the history of its study in world literary scholarship. The relevance of the research is determined by the unresolved question of whether horror is an independent genre or a mode, and by the absence of established terminology for the genre in Uzbek literary studies. Using comparative-typological and historical-poetic methods, the article systematizes aesthetic (E. Burke, A. Radcliffe), psychoanalytic (S. Freud, J. Kristeva), structuralist (T. Todorov), philosophical (N. Carroll) and cognitive-evolutionary (M. Clasen) approaches. Eight typological markers of the genre are identified and tested on N.V. Gogol’s “Viy”, six stages of the genre’s study are distinguished, and Uzbek terminological equivalents are proposed.
