Comparative reconstruction of cultural concepts in english and uzbek proverbs through conceptual metaphor and mental-space modelling

The article investigates how culturally meaningful concepts are reconstructed from English and Uzbek proverbs by combining Conceptual Metaphor Theory with Mental Space and Conceptual Integration approaches. The central argument is that cross-linguistic proverb comparison becomes methodologically stronger when it distinguishes the concrete source scenario, the temporary discourse situation to which the proverb is applied, the generic relational structure shared by these spaces, and the culturally conventional knowledge that constrains interpretation. The study uses qualitative material from authoritative English and Uzbek paremiographic collections and applies conceptual, frame-semantic, comparative and pragmatic analysis. The results show that proverb pairs conventionally treated as equivalents may display different degrees of conceptual convergence. Some preserve closely parallel source-domain organization, whereas others rely on markedly different images but generate comparable generic schemas concerning caution, opportunity, uncertainty, social response or irreversible action. The analysis further demonstrates that cultural specificity is often located not in an entirely unique concept but in the preferred image through which a recurring human problem is conceptualized. A Conceptual-Mental Reconstruction framework is proposed to account for the interaction of source imagery, target situation, generic schema, cultural anchoring and pragmatic projection. The framework provides a principled basis for contrastive paremiology and proverb translation without equating literal similarity with conceptual equivalence.
