Transcatheter closure of septal heart defects in children has long ceased to be an experimental technique – today it is a routine alternative to open surgery. However, the risk of developing acute and subacute heart failure in the perioperative period remains underestimated, particularly in young children with pre-existing haemodynamic compromise. This study presents the results of a prospective cohort study involving 82 children with septal heart defects, divided into an interventional closure group (n = 52) and an open-heart surgery group with cardiopulmonary bypass (n = 30). The dynamics of NT-proBNP, galectin-3, soluble ST2 and high-sensitivity troponin I were studied in the pre-operative period and over the 7 days following the procedure. It was found that the combination of NT-proBNP and ST2 had the greatest prognostic value with regard to the development of early postoperative heart failure (AUC 0.86; p<0.001). The data obtained support the recommendation that these biomarkers be included in the standard protocol for perioperative monitoring of children undergoing endovascular repair of septal defects.
