Annotatsiya

This article examines the linguistic expression of the abstract concept of time within the vast and varied repertoire of English phraseologisms. Employing a cognitive-linguistic approach, the study investigates how cultural, historical, and experiential perspectives on time are entrenched and conventionalized in fixed expressions, idioms, and proverbs. The research analyzes phraseological units centered on temporal notions (e.g., clock, hour, minute, day, year) to categorize their conceptual metaphors (e.g., Time is money; Time is a moving object; Time is a container.). Findings reveal that English phraseology largely reflects a linear, commodity-based, and often personified conceptualization of time, serving to structure daily activities, emphasize urgency, and convey experiential wisdom. The analysis provides insight into the cognitive mechanisms underlying idiomatic meaning and the cultural significance of temporal structuring.
