Character evolution and identity crisis in twentieth- century American and uzbek novels

Annotatsiya

This article examines the phenomenon of character evolution and identity crisis in twentieth-century American and Uzbek fiction, tracing how protagonists in both literary traditions grapple with social transformation, spiritual dislocation, and the search for selfhood. Drawing on comparative literary analysis, the study investigates how authors from two distinct cultural contexts the industrializing West and the post-colonial Central Asian milieu construct narratives of psychological and moral disintegration and reconstruction. The article demonstrates that, despite divergent historical trajectories, both American and Uzbek novels of the twentieth century converge on a shared preoccupation with the fragmented self, the collapse of traditional identity anchors, and the existential quest for authentic being. Key novels by authors such as F. Scott Fitzgerald, Ralph Ellison, and Sadr Ziyo, Oybek, and Abdulla Qahhor are analyzed to illustrate this parallel thematic landscape. The findings suggest that character evolution in these traditions is not merely a literary device but a cultural barometer reflecting the anxieties of modernity and the human search for meaning in an age of upheaval.
