Median cysts of the neck include cysts of the thyroid duct (thyroglossal cysts) and dermoid cysts. They are localized in the midline, often near the hyoid bone and manifest as a swelling in this area. Differentiation of these cystsis necessary for proper treatment planning. Ultrasonography is the most common modality for diagnosis, but sonographic features characteristic of thyroglossal and dermoid cysts require further study.
