Drawing on archival documents and specialised literature, the article analyses the historical turning point that occurred in the irrigation and land-reclamation system of the Khorezm oasis in the lower Amu Darya during the second half of the twentieth century. The author distinguishes three stages in the transition from centuries-old dam-free irrigation, dependent on the natural regime of the river and based on manual labour, to dam-based, seasonally regulated and mechanised irrigation. It is argued that construction in Khorezm was carried out not on empty land but on top of a centuries-old engineering tradition and a dense irrigation network, which fundamentally distinguishes it from the new reclamation of the Karshi or Sherabad steppes. The study shows that with the commissioning of the Takhiatash and Tuyamuyun hydro-schemes the water supply of the oasis reached the most reliable level in its history, yet the lag in collector-drainage construction, the absence of canal lining and the changing basin-wide distribution of water brought the oasis close to ecological crisis.
