Among the late complications of diabetes mellitus, cataract is distinguished, which leads to the deterioration of visual functions and ultimately to blindness. Despite the predominance of surgical treatment for cataracts at present, it is accompanied by a number of limitations and complications in diabetes mellitus. Therefore, studying the processes of cataract development and their prevention is very important. This review, based on the analysis of data from scientific sources mainly from 2014 to 2020, using such internet resources as PubMed, Web of Science, Medline, eLibrary.ru, and Cyberleninka, presents cataractogenesis in diabetes mellitus as a complex of parallel but interconnected pathobiochemical processes.
