Objective: Current research suggests that bariatric surgery can improve depression, anxiety, and quality of life in many patients. However, in a minority of patients, psychological health remains unchanged or may worsen over time. Several short-term studies report that bariatric surgery significantly reduces symptoms of depression and anxiety in the first year after surgery. While several studies have shown that pre-existing mental disorders such as depression and anxiety prevent suboptimal weight loss, others have found that comparable outcomes in patients with pre-existing mental disorders, especially symptoms of anxiety and depression, are not associated with changes in body weight. . This article examines mental status changes in metabolic surgery candidates. Aim: The study examined the impact of bariatric surgery such as sleeve resection and Roux-en-Y gastric bypass on the psychological health of patients, as well as the impact of diagnosed depression on weight loss after the procedure. Materials and methods: From December 2023 to March 2024, the psychological health of 64 patients who underwent bariatric surgery in a private clinic in Tashkent was studied using anthropometric studies and the HADS questionnaire. Gastric bypass was performed on the Ru-Joint in 17 patients, sleeve gastrectomy - in 47 patients. The examination data of the patients were compared with the results at 6 months after surgery. Results: Of the 64 patients, 24 had mild or severe depressive symptoms at 6 months (Ru-Joint gastric bypass n=7, SG n=17). Sleeve gastrectomy and Ru-Joint gastric bypass gave similar results in improving the psychological well-being of patients, but weight loss was 10.6% greater in the gastric bypass group. Improvement in depressive syndrome scores was accompanied by an increase in weight loss. The percentage of weight loss in patients with diagnosed depressive symptoms was similar to that in patients without depressive symptoms. Conclusions: Weight loss improves depression scores in patients regardless of the surgical procedure. These results confirm the results of previous longitudinal studies and show that BS is associated with improved psychosocial functioning in patients.
