Endocrine ophthalmopathy is an autoimmune disease often associated with thyroid dysfunction. It affects the tissues of the orbit and periorbital structures, causing their edema and degenerative changes. One of the most serious complications of endocrine ophthalmopathy is dystyroid optic neuropathy (DON), a pathology in which the optic nerve suffers. DON is a relatively new and actively studied condition that can lead to irreversible vision loss.
