With the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, researchers began to investigate the pathogenetic mechanisms causing the infection and its complications, to analyze patient groups with chronic diseases, and to develop effective methods for combating both the acute and chronic consequences of the infection. This study analyzed data from 5,023 patients who had contracted COVID-19 between April and December 2020. The patients were divided into four groups: those without diabetes mellitus (3,648), with type 1 diabetes (213), with type 2 diabetes (763), and with newly diagnosed diabetes during COVID-19 (399). The study results showed that clinical symptoms such as shortness of breath, chest pain, and arrhythmia were more pronounced in patients with diabetes, especially those with type 2. Patients who had been taking sulfonylureas reported shortness of breath more frequently.
