The article examines the phenomenon of occasional transformation of phraseological units and analyzes its main types. Occasional transformation is understood as an intentional modification of a fixed expression in a particular communicative situation determined by the speaker’s communicative purposes. Unlike canonical phraseological units characterized by stability and reproducibility, occasional modifications display structural variability, semantic novelty, and pragmatic orientation. The study explores the mechanisms of idiom modification and identifies the principal transformation techniques: component substitution, expansion, reduction, contamination, and semantic reinterpretation. It is shown that transformed phraseological units perform expressive, evaluative, persuasive, and text-forming functions in discourse. The results demonstrate that occasional transformation represents linguistic creativity and reflects the interaction between the language system and speech activity. Phraseological units function not only as ready-made clichés but also as productive patterns capable of generating new meanings depending on context.
