The present study investigates the notion of occasional phraseology and determines its functional status in discourse. Occasional phraseological units are interpreted as context-dependent, individually created multi-word expressions that arise through the creative transformation of conventional phraseological patterns. Unlike canonical phraseological units institutionalized in the language system, occasional formations demonstrate structural variability, semantic innovation, and strong pragmatic orientation. The paper analyzes their semantic, stylistic, and communicative properties and identifies their role in expressing speaker stance, enhancing textual expressiveness, and strengthening communicative impact. The analysis shows that occasional phraseological units function as intermediate formations between systemic phraseology and free word combinations. They rely on recognizable idiomatic models but introduce new contextual meanings. The findings indicate that occasional phraseological units perform important discourse functions: they intensify emotional evaluation, attract attention, and contribute to persuasive communication. Consequently, phraseology should be viewed not only as a set of fixed expressions but also as a flexible mechanism enabling creative language use in discourse.
