This article focuses on the essence of prescriptive and descriptive approaches in translation studies and the differences between them. It analyzes the traditional prescriptive views based on strict translation rules and norms, as well as the limitations of this approach. At the same time, the article explores the reasons for the emergence of the descriptive trend in recent decades, its theoretical foundations, and its significance for scholarly research. The main principles of the descriptive approach are defined as studying translation as a natural outcome of linguistic and intercultural interaction, analyzing translation practices on the basis of empirical evidence, and considering real conditions of translation activity. The paper draws conclusions about the interaction of these two approaches, their role in modern translation studies methodology, and their influence on academic research. It also examines the historical dominance of the prescriptive model and its impact on traditional didactics. The study emphasizes that the growth of the descriptive approach has contributed to the strengthening of empirical research methods in translation studies. The importance of observation, corpus analysis, and experimental methods in studying translation is highlighted. Furthermore, the descriptive approach is presented as a new scientific paradigm that reveals the creative and adaptive nature of the translation process. The article concludes that the integration of these approaches offers promising directions for future research, and its findings can be applied to the improvement of translation studies curricula and research methodology.
