This article examines the image of “Another America” created in Jean Toomer’s Cane (1923) and its significance within Southern Renaissance literature. It explores the alternative national narrative proposed by Toomer as an African American writer in opposition to the dominant white Southern mythology, the artistic representation of racial identity, and the principles of constructing a new vision of America through modernist form. The study draws upon postcolonial theory, critical race theory, myth criticism, and modernist poetics. Particular attention is paid to the work’s tripartite structure, the interaction between poetic and prose sections, and the use of elements of African American folk culture. The analysis reveals that Toomer portrays the South from two perspectives: on the one hand, he deconstructs the mythology of the “Old South” by exposing the realities of Black rural life; on the other hand, he creates an image of “Another America” grounded in African American cultural and spiritual traditions. Toomer conceptualizes racial identity as a fluid phenomenon without rigid boundaries. Cane represents one of the most important examples of an African American counternarrative in Southern Renaissance literature and affirms the African American experience as an integral component of American national identity.
