Annotatsiya

This article presents an integrated comparative analysis of tense transformation in English and Uzbek online news discourse, combining corpus-based evidence on transformation patterns with a theoretically grounded examination of cultural determinants. Drawing on a corpus of 1,000 news texts (500 English: BBC, CNN; 500 Uzbek: Xalq so'zi, Kun.uz, Daryo.uz) collected between 2023 and 2025, the study identifies dominant tense shift patterns in each language, quantifies their distribution, and explains the cultural frameworks — monochronic vs. polychronic time orientation, short-term vs. long-term value orientation, and sequential vs. synchronic temporal modelling that motivate these patterns. The central finding is that English news discourse constructs events as dynamic, ongoing processes through a Present-anchored tense architecture (Present Simple: 38%, Present tenses collectively: 63%), while Uzbek news discourse constructs events as verified, completed facts through a Past-anchored architecture (Past Simple: 44–62%, Past forms collectively: 69%). These structural oppositions are not arbitrary grammatical preferences but are deeply rooted in culturally differentiated journalistic norms and audience expectations. Statistical analysis confirms that cultural factors exert a significant effect on tense choice (χ² = 487.32, p < 0.001). The findings carry implications for contrastive linguistics, translation studies, media literacy education, and cross-cultural communication.
