Annotatsiya

The study provides an in-depth analysis of visual modality in William Faulkner’s works, focusing on the novellas “A Rose for Emily” and “Dry September.” Visual modality is considered a tool for constructing the poetics of decay, spiritual and social degradation, and for expressing the inner world of characters. The analysis demonstrates that key elements of visual modality include light, shadow, color, and dust. In “A Rose for Emily,” dust symbolizes stagnation, the immobility of time, and death, whereas in “Dry September,” it acquires a dynamic, aggressive character, reflecting the spiritual aridity of society. Light loses its illuminating function and becomes an instrument of blinding or revealing cruelty. The color palette is predominantly achromatic, reflecting entropy, moral degradation, and inner emptiness. Lexical-semantic analysis reveals a systematic deployment of visual modality to create a Gothic atmosphere, where darkness conceals, light blinds, and color signals decay and death. The results highlight that Faulkner uses visual modality not only to create atmosphere but also as a tool of psychological impact on the reader, constructing a complex, multidimensional world in which internal and external realities merge.
