The article examines word-formation innovations—occasionalisms, neologisms, blended and telescopic formations—as deliberate rhetorical devices employed by lecturers to manage audience attention. Drawing on video recordings of 45 public lectures by Russian and international scholars (2018–2024), totaling over 130 hours, corpus analysis, functional-stylistic description, and linguistic experiments were applied to identify and classify 387 word-formation innovations. The innovations were found to perform attentional (attention-capturing), cohesive, mnemonic, and emotive functions. The most productive models are suffixal formations with evaluative semantics, prefixal structures with intensifying meaning, and telescopic units combining terminological and expressive elements. The findings may be applied in the teaching of academic oratory and rhetoric.
