Expressing the phenomena of existence through a limited number of words and phrases, while containing multiple meanings within a finite set of units, significantly expands the functional capacity of language and facilitates its use. In the Uzbek language, a single word or term may function both at the general lexical level and across various scientific fields. In the semantic structure of polyfunctional terms used in different disciplines, field-specific meanings are differentiated, yet the semiotic connections between them are preserved. The semes of a polyfunctional term, representing concepts from different fields, share unifying schematic features; the presence of these shared features distinguishes such terms from homonymous units. Polyfunctional terms are employed across science, technology, and production, a tendency that is also evident in wastewater terminology. The article addresses the phenomenon of polyfunctionality in the terminology of wastewater and treatment systems. The derivative semes of polysemantic terms related to wastewater and its treatment systems, as well as the terminological meanings of polysemantic universal lexemes, arise on metaphorical and function-based grounds. The study of these derived semes within specialized terminological systems and the analysis of linguistic phenomena grounded in functional relatedness provide valuable insights for terminology studies.
