One of the literary phenomena in which meaning relies more on emotion than on direct perception or historical and cultural memory is intertextuality, a concept comprehensively introduced and interpreted within postmodernism. Although intertextuality fully manifested itself in postmodern literature and acquired significant scholarly importance as a means of intercultural and intertextual communication, this concept, like literature itself, has deep historical roots. Thus, in the literature of antiquity, the reworking of existing plots and images, rather than the creation of entirely new ones, was of primary importance. This tradition continued in subsequent centuries, and the distinctive features of intertextuality as understood today gradually became more apparent. One of the most illustrative examples of this phenomenon in the Middle Ages is Miguel de Cervantes’ Don Quixote. The introduction of the term intertext into scholarly discourse has therefore played an important and positive role in literary studies, as it enables the systematic analysis of numerous concepts, artistic devices, genre transformations, and image reinterpretations that have existed throughout the history of literature.
