This article examines the interaction of romanticism and realism in the short stories of Washington Irving. The study explores how romantic imagination, folklore elements, and symbolic imagery are blended with realistic depictions of everyday life and historical reality. In Irving’s narratives, romanticism functions as a means of aesthetic idealization, while realism ensures psychological credibility and social authenticity. Using literary and linguopoetic analysis, the article demonstrates that the synthesis of romantic and realistic elements constitutes a defining feature of Irving’s artistic style and significantly enhances the expressive power of his short stories.
