This article examines the role of public speaking in medieval Europe, focusing on its development and its links to education, politics, religion, and law. Building on the tradition of Greco-Roman rhetoric, public speaking in medieval Europe adapted to new institutional contexts such as cathedrals, universities, and courts. Emphasizing memory, gesture, and delivery, the study examines how political speeches, legal oratory, and preaching became the primary methods of persuasion in a predominantly oral society. By citing examples like the sermons of Bernard of Clairvaux, debates at Paris universities, and legal pleadings in Bologna, the essay argues that public speaking in medieval Europe was both a continuation of classical rhetoric and a distinct response to the social and spiritual conditions of the time.
