From humanity’s earliest days to the present, the age-old symbolic conflict between good and evil has endured in literature, art, and everyday life. Countless artistic and national images bear witness to this struggle. Uzbek oral folklore likewise juxtaposes virtuous protagonists with negative figures who continually create obstacles and dilemmas for them. Alongside these human characters stand imaginary-mythological beings: benevolent spirits who assist the hero and malevolent ones who inflict harm. Such creatures are commonly grouped into categories like jinn, pari, and dev. Within Uzbek mythology there is a distinctive set of female-formed forces that threaten humans, including Qora Umay, Alvasti, Sariq Qiz, Mortu, Ajina, Maston, and Oq Qiz. The beliefs attached to these beings have persisted for millennia, and this very longevity has left a noticeable imprint on literary fiction. This article focuses on Mortu, a figure that occupies a special position among evil entities because of its unique features. We investigate its morphological traits, functional-semantic roles, and significance within broader social and gender paradigms, thereby clarifying Mortu’s place in the mythological worldview of the Uzbek people.
