During the Cold War, Türkiye's Western-oriented foreign policy turned to Central Asia after the collapse of the USSR. In addition to the nationalist discourses of the period showing their influence in foreign policy, Turgut Özal also tried to be pragmatic. Türkiye's Central Asian policies have been carried out mainly at the presidential level since Özal. Although there were some economic, cultural and political developments between Türkiye and Central Asian countries, it could not reach a sufficient level. For example, the commercial partnerships of the two parties in import-export have not reached the highest levels today. In addition, Türkiye still has not fully understood the basic dynamics of the region. Culturally, the people of the two sides still do not know each other. The aim of the article is to criticize the efforts to establish a Turan state or to create an EU-style union without seeing the regional and global reality in the light of nationalist discourses and instead of this to suggest that trade can be developed by creating a free trade zone in the style of NAFTA.
