This article classifies slang units according to their mode of expression and structural features. Slang is divided into verbal and nonverbal types, with particular attention given to gestures and body movements whose meanings vary across cultures. Slang units are also grouped into those that are formally synonymous with standard language units and those that are structurally different from them.
