Victorian literature (1837–1901) reflects the era's societal transformations, marked by industrialization, shifting class dynamics, and evolving gender norms. As these changes unfolded, writers began to explore not only external social structures but also the internal lives of their characters, contributing to the rise of artistic psychologism. This article examines how prominent Victorian authors—such as Charlotte Brontë, Charles Dickens, and George Eliot—utilized psychologism to portray the psychological complexity of their characters while addressing broader societal concerns. Through close readings of Jane Eyre, Great Expectations, and Middlemarch, this study explores how these writers depicted characters' inner conflicts, moral dilemmas, and emotional struggles, reflecting the era's growing interest in human psychology. Additionally, this paper applies Freudian psychoanalysis and other relevant psychological theories to interpret the psychological depth of these novels. The findings reveal that Victorian authors used psychologism to engage with complex issues such as social mobility, gender roles, and personal identity, ultimately laying the groundwork for modern psychological fiction. By integrating individual psychology with societal commentary, artistic psychologism emerged as a defining characteristic of Victorian literature. This study underscores the lasting influence of psychologism on narrative form and character development, offering new insights into its cultural significance.
