This article analyses the implementation of the adversarial principle at the pre-trial stage of criminal proceedings in the Republic of Uzbekistan. It reviews the limits of its application, existing challenges, and prospects for enhancement. Although adversariality is formally recognised in the Criminal Procedure Code (CPC), its effective realisation during the pre-trial phase remains constrained by the inquisitorial character of preliminary investigation and a marked imbalance in procedural opportunities between prosecution and defence. The paper highlights recent reforms — including the introduction of an investigating judge, expanded powers for defence counsel to collect evidence, and strengthened judicial oversight and complaint mechanisms — and concludes that further improvement of procedural safeguards, genuine equality of arms, and alignment with international standards are essential to strengthen adversariality at the pre-trial stage.
