This article examines the stages of formation and development of the institute of preliminary investigation in the Republic of Uzbekistan. The author conducts an in-depth analysis of legal sources, starting from the pre-Islamic era influenced by Zoroastrian norms and the Avesta, through the period governed by Sharia law, and up to modern reforms initiated after the country gained independence. The article highlights the institutional evolution of investigative bodies, the transformation of criminal procedure legislation, and measures aimed at ensuring the protection of citizens’ rights and freedoms. It also outlines the progression of procedural law from the Soviet period to contemporary efforts at reforming and modernizing the criminal investigation system. The study is supported by relevant normative acts and legal documents regulating the activity of pretrial investigation authorities in Uzbekistan.
