This study examines the historical, social, and economic factors behind the emergence of “Russian nomadism” in Turkestan during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The expansionist policy of the Russian Empire and the centralized Soviet system were key drivers of Russian migration into Turkestan. Beginning in the second half of the 19th century, land-use policies enacted by the Russian government, along with expanding agriculture and the incorporation of Turkestan into the Russian economic network, facilitated the arrival of Russian settlers. During this period, many Russians—seeking new opportunities and aiming to improve their economic and social conditions—chose to migrate to Turkestan.
