The article highlights issues related to the study of the history of the Great Khorezm State in different historical periods. The process of emergence and development of ancient Khorezm statehood is considered, sources and approaches to the study of this topic and their significance are analyzed. The role of the ancient Khorezm state in the history of Central Asia and the reflection of information about ancient Khorezm in the Avesta are discussed. Special attention is paid to the processes of urbanization and the creation of defensive fortresses, which are considered as key factors and reasons for the emergence and development of ancient statehood. The issues of periodization of the development of the ancient Khorezm state and its stages of development are also touched upon.
