This article examines the organization, trading locations, and regional networks of the slave trade in the Emirate of Bukhara and the Khanate of Khiva during the nineteenth century. It compares the accounts of Nikolay Muravyov, Alexander Burnes, P. I. Demaison, N. Zalesov, Arminius Vamberi, and Mohan Lal, with particular attention to the distinction between public slave markets and other locations where transactions may have occurred. The study explores the role of caravanserais and private premises, the numbers of captives recorded by foreign visitors, and changes associated with the expansion of Russian imperial power in the second half of the nineteenth century. It argues that the slave trade cannot be fully understood through an examination of major urban markets alone.
