A Comparative Study of Terminological Consistency in English–Uzbek Telemedicine Translation Using Knowledge Graphs

This article comparatively examines terminological consistency in English–Uzbek telemedicine translation through a knowledge-graph-based approach. In telemedicine and digital-health discourse, translation quality is affected by inconsistent variants for the same concept, the conflation of semantically related but functionally distinct terms, and unstable rendering of abbreviations and hybrid formations. Based on World Health Organization documents on telemedicine and digital health, SNOMED CT translation principles, and recent studies of English–Uzbek medical terminology, a pilot terminological sample of 60 telemedicine terms was compiled. Each item was modelled through a concept node containing semantic class, hierarchical and associative relations, the English label, a preferred Uzbek equivalent, permitted synonyms, contextual constraints, and source information. The comparative analysis demonstrates that surface term-to-term matching is insufficient for distinguishing close concepts such as telehealth/telemedicine, electronic health record/electronic medical record, and remote monitoring/telemonitoring. A knowledge graph, by contrast, links lexical forms to explicit concepts and relations, enabling systematic variant control, concept-based disambiguation, and the assignment of one preferred target-language label while retaining validated synonyms. The study proposes a model for developing an English–Uzbek telemedicine lexicon as a concept-oriented digital terminological resource suitable for human translation, CAT environments, and future NLP applications.
