Linguopragmatic analysis of hyperbole in the expression of emotivity in English and Uzbek political discourse

Annotatsiya

This article examines the stylistic and linguopragmatic functions of hyperbole as a means of expressing emotivity in political discourse. Drawing on approaches from rhetoric, stylistics, pragmatics, and cognitive linguistics, hyperbole is viewed as a deliberate form of exaggeration that intensifies meaning, evaluation, and emotional impact. The study considers the concept of mubolag‘a in Uzbek linguistic tradition alongside theoretical approaches developed by Galperin, Arnold, Wales, and Claridge and others. The analysis demonstrates that hyperbole functions not merely as an ornamental stylistic device but as an important communicative resource for emphasizing information, expressing evaluative attitudes, attracting audience attention, and strengthening persuasion. Pragmatically, hyperbolic expressions depend on contextual and shared cultural knowledge, allowing recipients to recognize the intended exaggeration and interpret the speaker’s emotional and evaluative stance. The findings indicate that hyperbole plays a significant role in the linguistic realization of emotivity and in enhancing the persuasive and expressive potential of political discourse.
