Specific Features of Developing Reading Competence in Philology Students Through the Study of Literary Works

This article clarifies the concept of “reading competence” in the context of the professional training of philology students through the study of literary works. Drawing on a comparison of different theoretical approaches, it examines the activity-based nature of reading and the distinctive features of its professional development within philological education. The study demonstrates that the comprehension of literary texts in professional philological training extends beyond understanding their content to include the analysis of literary form, interpretation, text-based argumentation, and reflection. Based on theoretical analysis and the systematization of existing models, four interrelated components of reading competence are identified: motivational and goal-setting, cognitive and literary-theoretical, analytical and interpretive, and reflective and evaluative. Particular attention is paid to the interaction among these components in the process of professionally oriented reading. Their practical implementation is illustrated through an analysis of Ernest Hemingway’s short story “Cat in the Rain”, demonstrating the progression from an initial understanding of the literary work to the analysis of its artistic organization, the formulation of an interpretive hypothesis, its substantiation through textual evidence, and subsequent reflective evaluation.
