Gender representation and gender bias in Uzbek-Russian-English translation: linguistic and cultural perspectives

Annotatsiya

This article examines gender representation and potential gender bias in translation between Uzbek, Russian, and English from linguistic and cultural perspectives. Structural differences in the expression of gender across the three languages are considered, with particular attention to personal pronouns, grammatical gender, occupational terms, and references to social and professional roles. The study identifies translation contexts in which gender information may be introduced, neutralized, or modified because of differences between source- and target-language systems. Particular attention is given to gender-neutral Uzbek expressions that may require greater gender specification when translated into Russian or permit alternative gender-neutral choices in English. The relationship between linguistic structure, cultural conventions, and translators’ lexical and grammatical decisions is also examined. Furthermore, the study considers how culturally embedded assumptions about gender roles may affect the interpretation and translation of otherwise ambiguous expressions. The analysis emphasizes the importance of context-sensitive translation strategies for preserving meaning, minimizing unjustified gender specification, and achieving linguistically accurate and culturally appropriate translation.
