A Comparative Study of Pragmatic Features in English–Uzbek Translations Produced by Human Translators and Neural Machine Translation Systems

This article comparatively examines the pragmatic properties of English–Uzbek translations produced by a human translator and neural-network-based translation tools. Moving beyond lexical and grammatical correspondence, the study focuses on the preservation of communicative intention, context-dependent meaning, implicature, illocutionary force, politeness strategies, register, and culturally conditioned expressions. The research follows the IMRAD structure and draws on recent work at the intersection of pragmatics and translation studies, context-aware neural machine translation, large language models, and studies addressing the resource and morphological constraints of English–Uzbek machine translation. Methodologically, a pilot corpus of 60 English source units was divided into four functional groups: everyday interaction, official-administrative discourse, journalistic/informational texts, and phraseological-cultural units. Human-reference and neural translations were compared through an expert-analytical framework covering contextual adequacy, implicature, speech-act force, politeness, phraseological and cultural adaptation, stylistic naturalness, and semantic accuracy. The findings indicate that neural systems perform comparatively well in semantic accuracy and standard syntactic constructions, yet show more pragmatic loss in implicit meaning, irony, idiomaticity, interpersonal tone, and culture-specific adaptation. The study argues that a human–AI post-editing model is a productive practical approach for English–Uzbek translation, particularly when pragmatic equivalence is treated as a quality criterion rather than an optional stylistic refinement.
