Education and physical education in the national schools of Turkestan in the second half of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries: a historical-pedagogical analysis

Annotatsiya

This article provides a historical-pedagogical and source-critical analysis of traditional national schools, madrasahs, qorikhonas, daloilkhonas, and otinbibi schools in Turkestan in the second half of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Drawing on primary and secondary historical sources, archival records of the National Archive of Uzbekistan, periodical materials, and contemporary accounts, it examines the institutional organization of schooling, teaching methods, daily routines, material support, female education, moral upbringing, and debates over literacy. One-sided interpretations found in part of the colonial and Soviet literature are reconsidered in light of the purpose and context of the sources. The study distinguishes school-based physical education from the broader sphere of folk physical culture. Although physical education did not exist as a separate subject in traditional Muslim schools, wrestling, ulak-kupkari, horse racing, horsemanship, tightrope walking, acrobatics, active games, archery, and military-applied physical exercises occupied an important place in community life. The article argues that the historical role of national schools and folk physical culture should be assessed by considering their social functions, regional diversity, and institutional limitations together.
