Women Excluded from the Pages of History: The Role of Women in the Jadid Movement in Turkestan in the Early Twentieth Century

Between 1910 and 1924, women’s participation in the Jadid movement in Turkestan was often marginalized and is documented only fragmentarily in periodical publications and archival records. This study aims to reconstruct these scattered traces into a coherent historical account and to identify the place of women’s activities within the interconnected spheres of Jadid schooling, the press, and charitable work. The study employs source analysis, the historical-comparative method, hermeneutic interpretation, and chronological analysis, with the documentary evidence examined through a three-stage dynamic framework. The first stage encompasses women who embraced reformist ideas and disseminated them within the family sphere. The second stage reflects their emergence as active participants through support for girls’ education, assistance with publishing activities, and mediation in public meetings. During the third stage, characterized by political instability, women assumed a more prominent role in providing social support and maintaining reformist networks. The analysis suggests that women were not merely peripheral participants in Jadidism but played an active role in sustaining and advancing the movement. This approach makes it possible to recover women’s practices that have largely disappeared from historical memory and to interpret them not merely as auxiliary activities but as organizational and ideological initiatives. As its scholarly contribution, the study proposes an interpretive model that situates women’s activities at the intersection of the press, education, and charitable work.
