This article examines the lexico-semantic classification of English toponyms within the framework of modern onomastic theory and semantic field theory. It analyzes the internal structure of toponyms, their appellative bases, and the functions of generic and specific components in the naming process. Using the motivational dimension of the D–M–S–Q coding matrix, the study classifies English toponyms into eight lexico-semantic macrofields. It also explores the application of semantic field theory to toponymic research, identifies the motivational semes underlying place names, and explains the functional roles of generic and specific components. The findings provide a systematic lexico-semantic model of English toponymy and contribute to the theoretical development of comparative and cognitive approaches to toponymic research.
